The Spanish navy captured eight suspected pirates after destroying one of their ships off the coast of Somalia on Sunday, the Defense Ministry said. A whaler ship and various skiffs filled with weapons and other materials were also confiscated in the raid.

The navy’s recent skirmish is yet another anti-piracy victory held under Europe’s “Operation Atlanta,” which has disbanded 21 pirate rings involving 250 criminals, destroyed 30 skiffs, and 11 mother ships since it’s formation in 2008.

Pirate hijackings in Somalian waters have increased in the recent months with pirates raking in millions in ransom.

Because of the growing need for safe waters in the area, the European defense ministries will extend “Operation Atlanta” beyond 2010.
