PHILADELPHIA—The traditional culture in Shen Yun Performing Arts stood out to Barrett Noone, a professor of plastic surgery who is also the executive director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

“The cultural value is phenomenal,” he said. “It really gives you a great feeling of the 5,000 years of culture in China.”

Mr. Noone, whose former roles include chief of plastic surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital, enjoyed the performance at Merriam Theater on May 5.

Mr. Noone’s more than three decades in the field also include pioneering concepts of breast reconstruction, and founding Physicians for Peace, an international service organization that has embarked on many missions throughout the Middle East.

Shen Yun, a New York-based company, criss-crosses the globe reviving the ancient Chinese culture, with a variety of myths, legends, and ethnicities presented in short dance pieces.

“Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture,“ according to the company’s website. ”Its stunning beauty and tremendous energy leave audiences uplifted and inspired.”

Mr. Noone, who was joined at the performance by his wife and two of his 12 grandchildren, said the presentation “is fabulous.”

“The technique of dancing, the technique of the music, the story of the culture, all intertwined,“ he said. ”It’s so visual and it’s very understandable.”
