New York State Sen. Eric Schneiderman won the Democratic primary against Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice and three other candidates to advance further in the race for attorney general (AG). The 55-year-old Schneiderman is vying for the seat that is currently occupied by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

Schneiderman will face Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan, a Republican, in the Nov. 2 general election. After he won the primary, the state senator went after Donovan, claiming that his opponent does not want to debate and shies away from issues.

“People who say we don't need the AG to be the sheriff of Wall Street are dead wrong at a time where there is still a lot of turbulence in the markets,” Schneiderman told Reuters on Tuesday.

Schneiderman attended Harvard Law School and practiced law privately for 15 years before getting elected as a state senator in 1998 to represent parts of the Bronx and Manhattan.
