NEW YORK—Environment New York wrote a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo Tuesday, reiterating its stance against fracking in New York. The letter cites an anonymous government source who claims that Cuomo is looking into a fracking project in communities that show support for the technology, as reported in the New York Times in June.

Fracking, the method of obtaining natural gas by blasting shale with a solution of water and chemicals, is banned in some states. New York currently has a moratorium for fracking and is reviewing nearly two years worth of comments from public hearings and scientific research to determine if New York will move forward with fracking.

“Dozens of New York organizations [in June] wrote to express their urgent concerns about media reports that New York State has already decided to proceed with fracking, even prior to the completion of the state’s environmental review process and despite gaps in this review,” the letter states. “Our organizations endorse this letter.”

Eleven organizations, including American Rivers and Environment America, signed Tuesday’s letter.
