Erin Moriarty, who stars in Amazon Prime’s superhero series “The Boys,” has been battling an autoimmune disorder known as Graves’ disease.
Moriarty, 30, shared the health update with her Instagram followers on June 13, writing that she was diagnosed with the chronic condition a month ago.
“One thing I can say: if I hadn’t chalked it all up to stress and fatigue, I would’ve caught this sooner.”
According to Mount Sinai, Graves’ disease affects the thyroid gland, a small, butterfly-shaped organ located in the neck just above the collarbone tasked with producing hormones that control the body’s metabolism.
Graves’ disease, which is most common in women over the age of 20, causes the body’s immune system to mistakenly attack the thyroid gland, greatly increasing the production of thyroid hormones, a condition known as hyperthyroidism.
Symptoms of the condition may include anxiety, trouble sleeping, moodiness, fatigue, hair loss, rapid or irregular heartbeat, and weight loss, among others.
In her post, Moriarty shared a screenshot of a text message she sent to her mother, in which she described feeling nauseous and fatigued.
“I can’t live like this forever. Or that long,” the actress wrote. “There aren’t moments anymore, not even a passing 5 seconds, when I feel normal.”
However, Moriarty said she began feeling more like herself within 24 hours of beginning treatment.
“I felt the light coming back on. It’s been increasing in strength ever since. If yours is dimming, even slightly, go get checked. Don’t ’suck it up' and transcend suffering; you deserve to be comfy,” she said.
Moriarty recently reprised her role as the superhero Starlight in the fourth season of Eric Kripke’s “The Boys,” which premiered on June 13.
The New York native first appeared on screen in 2010, starring in several episodes of the Emmy-winning soap opera “One Life to Live.” She is also known for her roles in “The Watch” (2012), “Captain Fantastic” (2016), “The Miracle Season” (2018), and “Catching Dust” (2023).
