Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki clinched his second Oscar on Sunday for his semi-autobiographical masterpiece, “The Boy and the Heron.”

The film, a captivating fantasy narrative following a young boy’s journey through grief, resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.

Although Mr. Miyazaki and his creative partner, Toshio Suzuki, were notably absent from the ceremony, Mr. Suzuki ensured their gratitude was conveyed through a statement delivered backstage at the ceremony. Kiyofumi Nakajima, Studio Ghibli’s chief operating officer, stepped in to deliver the statement on behalf of Mr. Suzuki and Mr. Miyazaki, apologizing for their absence with a touch of humor, remarking: “Please forgive them. They’re kind of up there in the age bracket.”

“We’re very honored to receive the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. We thank the Academy for the award,” Mr. Suzuki expressed in his statement. “I would also like to give my thanks to those who were involved in the production of this film and those who worked to distribute the film worldwide.”

Mr. Suzuki attributed their absence to their advancing years, acknowledging, “Both he and Miyazaki have aged considerably,” especially since Mr. Miyazaki’s last movie and nomination, “The Wind Rises,” a decade ago.
