Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has surrendered to police in Texas on Thursday on multiple charges, including aggravated assault, after he and another driver allegedly triggered a multivehicle crash on a Dallas highway in late March.

A spokeswoman for Mr. Rice’s lawyer, Texas state Sen. Royce West, confirmed that he turned himself in at the Glenn Heights Police Department.

The 23-year-old was booked into the regional jail in DeSoto, Texas. Mr. West said his client posted bond and was released on Thursday night.

In an emailed statement, the lawyer emphasized what he described as Mr. Rice’s “continued cooperation with law enforcement.”

“Mr. Rice acknowledges his actions and feels deeply for those injured as a result of this accident,” Mr. West said.

Last week, Mr. Rice posted on his Instagram story that he would take “full responsibility” for his role in the crash.

On Wednesday, Dallas police issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Rice. Prosecutors charged him with one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and six counts of collision involving injury.

Mr. West said previously that Mr. Rice was driving a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle when the crash occurred.

Police also issued a warrant on Wednesday for Theodore Knox, who is accused of driving a Chevrolet Corvette that was allegedly involved in the incident.

Lawyer Deandra Grant, who is representing Mr. Knox, said her client is cooperating with authorities, WFAA-TV reported. Dallas police said Thursday night that Mr. Knox was not currently in custody.

The 21-year-old is a junior at Southern Methodist University and a member of the football team.

On Thursday, the university suspended the cornerback from the team as a result of the charges, WFAA-TV reported.

Crash Details

On March 30 at about 6:20 p.m., police say that Mr. Rice and Mr. Knox were speeding in the far left lane of a Dallas highway when they lost control.

Dallas police spokeswoman Kristin Lowman said the Lamborghini drove onto the shoulder and “hit the center median wall, causing a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles.”

Police said the two men left the scene without providing their information or determining whether anyone needed medical attention.

The wreck shut down the highway for hours and left four people with minor injuries.

Mr. West said during a press conference on April 4 that his client was not attempting to run or hide from anyone, but he did not provide further explanation as to why Mr. Rice fled the scene.

“He’s a young man that made a mistake,” the lawyer told reporters, adding that Mr. Rice’s “heart goes out ”to those who were injured.

Four days later, Mr. Rice met with police for the first time.

When asked why Mr. Rice delayed speaking with law enforcement, Mr. West said it took that much time for him to retain a lawyer and for counsel to “get some sort of idea of what was going on.”

The Lamborghini driven by Mr. Rice was leased from The Classic Lifestyle, according to Kyle Coker, a lawyer for the Dallas-based exotic car rental company.

At least three of the crash victims have retained counsel.

Aggravated assault is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Collision involving serious bodily injury is a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and collision involving injury is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Mr. Rice was born in Philadelphia but grew up in North Richland Hills, a suburb of Fort Worth.

He attended Southern Methodist University where he played on the football team. In 2022, during his senior year, he had a breakout season that put him on the NFL radar. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs during the second round last year.
