Judge Frank Caprio, Known for Compassionate Courtroom Style, Dies at 88

Retired Judge Frank Caprio, the Rhode Island municipal judge whose compassion in the courtroom made him a viral figure across television and social media, died Aug. 20 at the age of 88 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

News of his passing was announced on his official Instagram account, which shared a photo of the late judge along with a tribute.

The statement described Caprio as “beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people,” noting that his “warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”

It added that he would be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose “legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired.”

“In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world—just as he did every day,” the statement concluded.

The announcement came less than a day after Caprio appeared in a video from his hospital bed asking his followers for continued prayers.

“Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback. I’m back in the hospital now and I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more,” Caprio said in the Aug. 19 video. He said that prayer had helped him through earlier challenges with his illness and that “the Almighty above is looking over us.”

Hours before news of his death, another update was shared on his Instagram account showing the judge smiling and giving a thumbs-up from his hospital bed.

The caption expressed gratitude on his behalf: “Judge Caprio wishes to sincerely thank each and every one of you for your prayers, love, and support while he is in the hospital. Your kindness and encouragement mean the world to him. He and his family are deeply grateful. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers today.”

Caprio revealed his cancer diagnosis in December 2023, explaining that it was discovered shortly after his birthday. At the time, he called pancreatic cancer “an insidious form of cancer” and said he was under the care of doctors both in Rhode Island and at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Caprio was first appointed as a municipal judge in 1985. He became widely recognized through “Caught in Providence,” a courtroom television program that ran nationally from 2018 to 2020 and earned multiple Daytime Emmy nominations.

Caprio retired from the bench in 2023 but remained an influential public figure, regularly sharing messages with supporters online.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
