NEW YORK—Nonfarm New York state employment rose by 86,500 jobs, according to numbers released on Tuesday by the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The numbers compared December 2010 (8,557,900 jobs) with December of 2011 (8,644,400). Nonfarm employment excludes, in addition to farm employees, private household workers, some nonprofit workers, and general government employees.

The state civilian labor force, including farm jobs decreased 19,600 from 9,574,900 from December 2010 through December 2011, though 5,800 jobs were gained between November and December 2011. The percentage of the New York state labor force that is unemployed as of December 2011 is at 8 percent, or 768,200, decreasing by 19,900 over the past year.

In New York City, there was an increase of 16,500 jobs from the end of 2010 to the end of 2011. City unemployment is at 9 percent, or 362,200, an increase of 10,200 over a year, and 4,900 between November and December 2011.

Statewide, many sectors made employment gains during the yearsuch as construction, trade, transportation, and financial activities. Manufacturing and government sector employment numbers decreased.

Nationwide, 37 states and the District of Columbia recorded unemployment rate decreases, 3 states experienced an unemployment increase, and 10 had no rate change. The national unemployment rate, 8.5 percent, was a 0.9 percentage point lower than in December 2010.
