Emma Coronel Aispuro has been thrust into the spotlight once again after the arrest of her husband, notorious drug kingpin Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman.
Aispuro made the news back in 2011 after she traveled from Mexico to Los Angeles County to give birth to twin girls.
U.S. officials have kept tabs on her for years, because of her status as the wife of Guzman, the head of the Sinaloa cartel. They married the day she turned 18 at a lavish wedding in central Mexico in 2007. He was 57.
Aispuro is also the neice of Ignacio “Nacho” Coronel, a one-time partner of Guzman’s who was killed in July 2010 during a shootout with the Mexican army. Her father was also reportedly a member of the cartel and killed in the border town of Agua Prieta.
Aispuro, now 24, holds U.S. citizenship. She was born to a U.S. citizen.
The father’s name on the birth certificate for the twin girls was blank but it is believed to be Guzman.
Aispuro was not arrested at the time because there are no charges against her, as it’s not clear how or if she is involved in the cartel.
When Guzman was arrested on February 22, an unidentified woman was arrested with him. It’s not clear if that woman was Coronel, although she was placed at the scene of the arrest by multiple reports.
