Deputy Secretary of the Interior Eduardo Sanchez said Coronel is the father of Guzman's third wife, Ema Coronel Aispuro, who married the purported gang boss in 2007 in a mountainous town in Durango state. When Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was arrested last week, it probably brought back painful memories for his young wife Emma Coronel Aispuro.

That’s because her father, who played “a key role” in the Sonaloa drug cartel headed by Guzman, was arrested last year.

Mexican federal police arrested Ines Coronel Barreras in Agua Prieta, across the border of Douglas, Arizona.

Emma’s brother or brother-in-law was also arrested.

She married Guzman in 2007 at a controversial party celebrating her winning Great Coffee and Guava Festival queen. It’s said that she only won after some 400 men on 200 motorcycles roared into the relatively remote Canelas to help her win the competition. Of the six planes that landed, El Chapo stepped out from one of them. He was 54 at the time, while she was 18.

Emma’s father was in charge of smuggling marijuana for the Sinaloa drug cartel across the Mexico-Arizona border, Mexican authorities told the Associated Press.

She witnessed the Guzman arrest first-hand. She and two children, presumably her twin daughters, were with him at a small apartment in Mazatlan when authorities busted in and handcuffed him.
