Dear Marc:
I want a fun project to do this weekend! I have these taupe pillow covers that could use a little TLC. Do you have a technique that would help me bring them back to life?
Mary

Dear Mary:

One of my all time favourite ways to up-cycle accent pillows is to paint them. Yes, that’s right, I said “paint.” Did you know that there are special paints that can be purchased at craft stores that allow you to paint fabric? And best of all, if you use a pillow with a pattern, you don’t have to be artistic! Just paint within the lines and it will look fantastic.

Embellished accent pillow:

• 100% natural or natural blend fabric accent pillow cover
• Fabric paint(s)
• Small craft paint brush
• Cardboard
• Rhinestone setter hot-fix applicator wand (optional)
• Rhinestones to use with hot-fix applicator (optional)

Step 1: Choose a pillow cover (100% natural or natural blend fabric) with an interesting design or pattern. Wash and dry the pillow cover (without using fabric softener). Once dry, insert a piece of cardboard inside the pillow cover to protect opposing sides from paint seepage.

Step 2: Highlight specific areas of the cover’s design or pattern with paint.

Step 3 (Optional): Embellish the pillow cover by adding decorative rhinestones with a rhinestone setter hot-fix applicator wand.

Step 4: Insert a pillow inside the cover and display it on a chair.
