El Nido, Palawan, reportedly suffered minimal damage during Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) over the weekend, according to reports.
El Nido is considered a top tourist destination in the area, with a high level of biodiversity.
The El Nido Resorts director for sales and marketing, Joey Bernardino, told ABS-CBN that four resorts on the island are nearly cleaned out. They are Miniloc Island, Lagen Island, Apulit Island, and Pangulasian Island.
“Thankfully, we are happy to report that all our guests, staff, personnel and our neighbors are all safe and secure,” he said.
Bernardino added that the resorts “withstood the rains and emerged with minimal damage.”
However, residents of Taytay, also in Palawan, suffered major losses during the storm.
“We thank all of you for the support and prayers you have given us in this trying time. We urge everyone not to forget our fellow countrymen who are still in need. We join everyone in prayer and in the hope of a better tomorrow,” he continued.
Maiko ‘Michelle’ Reimann, an Australian backpacker, was in El Nido when the storm hit.
“She texted us before the typhoon hit and there was just a lot of rain in the area where she was,” her father told the Brisbane Times.
Reports have said that thousands of people have died during the typhoon, namely in Tacloban City and the provinces of Samar and Leyte.
