The mother of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman, María Consuelo Loera Pérez, has reacted to the arrest of her son.

Perez, known to her friends and family as Dona Chelo, told Univision: We raise our children and in the end they make their own decisions on how they want their life to turn out. I am his mother and he will always be my son. I will always be his mother.”

She said that he chose his life and now must settle his problems before it’s too late.

“He already experienced what is out there in the world, so now he has to look for God, because God is the only one that can protect him and help him to sort out his problems,” she said.

She also said that the authorities who detained El Chapo will “one day recognize that they too have a God to forgive them.”

As for Guzman’s life, she mused that “Many people are lamenting what’s going on with him.”

Chelo is very religious, shunning ordinary comforts for study.

“I never liked the TV and instead of wasting time watching TV best I devote myself to study the Bible,”  she said.

Chelo hadn’t been interviewed in almost a decade.

Despite her son becoming extremely wealthy, Chelo has led a simple and austere life. Five of her 11 children have died.

Chelo lives high in the mountains of Badiraguato in La Tuna, Mexico.

She said that she will visit her son in prison.
