Eight children at a daycare center in Shanghai were hospitalized after an employee slashed and injured them with a box cutter on Aug. 29.

The children, aged between three and four, were in the same class. One child was seriously wounded, with three cuts on the neck, and needed surgery. The other children were wounded on the neck, face, hands, nose, or the head.

The suspect, a female employee in her 30s, is in police custody, but the motive of the attack is unclear. It has also been reported that she may have psychological problems.

Nearby residents said they heard loud cries of help coming from the daycare center. They then saw a woman attacking children with a box cutter, Shanghai-based Xinmin Online reported.

All eight children were sent for emergency care to the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai.

The Epoch Times called the daycare center, but the call was hung up. Calls for news updates to the Children’s Hospital and the emergency care also failed.

The attack brought back frightening memories of similar incidents in China last year.
