Attorney General Eric Holder told Russia on Friday that the United States won’t seek the death penalty for Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked classified information to two media outlets last month.

Snowden is in a transit zone in Russia and has been seeking official entry into the country for several weeks.

The U.S. Department of Justice also told Russia that Snowden wouldn’t be executed or tortured if he is returned to America, according to Sky News.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
