Earthquakes Rattle Mexico: 5.5 Magnitude, 5.1 Aftershock. Guatemala: 6.2

A 5.1 and 5.5 magnitude earthquake rattled near the coastal city of Santiago Pinotepa Nacional in Oaxaca, Mexico on March 26, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) earthquake map. An earlier 6.2 earthquake shook Guatemala on March 25.

A 5.1 and 5.5 magnitude earthquake rattled near the coastal city of Santiago Pinotepa Nacional in Oaxaca, Mexico on March 26, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) earthquake map. An earlier 6.2 earthquake shook Guatemala on March 25.

Earthquake alarms sounded in Mexico City and buildings swayed; according to AP. The earthquake was 227 miles SSE of Mexico City, according to the Weather Channel.

The earthquake in Mexico did not cause injuries or damage, according to NBC News.

“Located atop three of the large tectonic plates, Mexico is one of the world’s most seismologically active regions,” states the USGS website.

In Nahuatl, a language of the Nahuan branch of the Uto-Aztecan language, Pinotepa means “toward the crumbling hill.”

In San Jose Pinula, Guatemala where a 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred on March 25, there were no initial reports of damage or victims, said emergency service officials, according to Reuters.
