The Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, or E3, will open to much anticipation in two days. The Expo is widely considered the largest and most significant video game convention in the world, where producers may dole out extravagant exhibits and performances in order to display a developing project.

Naturally, the expo is a great place to unveil and announce new products.

One of the most highly anticipated developments this year revolves around the announcement by Nintendo in April that its newest video game console and successor to the Wii will be revealed and demonstrated at the expo.

According to IGN, the system will be playable and will purportedly be much more powerful and capable than current Xbox or Playstation systems, utilizing 3D technology and touchscreen controllers. The new Nintendo console will also be backwards compatible with previous Wii titles.

Other hardware on the expo floor will include Nintendo’s 3DS handheld portable game system and its potential competitor, Sony’s new and unnamed next generation portable. Microsoft is capitalizing on its recently introduced Kinect Xbox 360 motion-sensing platform by developing a slew of games directed at the technology.

The core focus of the expo, however, has never been on hardware but software. Hotly anticipated games this year include titles like:

Batman: Arkham City – The action title sequel to the highly successful Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - The next adventure installment of the beloved and long-running Nintendo series.

Mass Effect 3 - The sci-fi action roleplaying game following two successful and critically acclaimed prequels.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations – A historical action adventure game that also follows several highly successful prequels.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - The fifth game in the epic adventure fantasy roleplaying series.

Battlefield 3 - DICE and EA’s latest and technologically grandest foray into the first-person shooter genre.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – Activision’s third installment in the blockbuster first-person shooter series.

Hundreds of other games will be at E3, among many other technologies, shows, and random surprises, all of which will be demonstrated and displayed at the Los Angeles Convention Center on June 7, where the expo will run until June 9.
