The city of Duluth, Minnesota is accepting applications for a new opening--aerial lift bridge operator.
The opening is rare, because the operators usually work at their jobs for decades.
“It’s not very often that a job opening on the bridge comes up. It generates a lot of interest,” Aerial Lift Bridge Supervisor Dave Campbell told WDIO-TV.
The position requires not being afraid of heights, while a background in mechanical or electrical maintenance will give applicants a boost in the hiring process. Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized electrical training, plus two years of experience working with large electrically operated machinery; or three years of experience working with complex mechanized equipment; or one year of experience working with computer controlled electrical equipment; or a combination of education, training, and experience in the above areas which is accepted as equivalent.
“Everybody always says, ‘Well, you push a button, and it goes up.’ Technically, yeah, that’s what we do. But there’s a whole lot of other stuff that gets involved in it too,” Campbell said.
According to the city’s website, the public works job pays $42,444 to $49,680 annually.
“Ensure safe passage of ships, pedestrians, and motorists by operating and maintaining lift bridges, and related equipment,” the job description says.
The selection process features a review of education and experience. Applicants who pass through that phase will then be invited for an oral exam.
The applications will be accepted through Monday.
