[xtypo_dropcap]F[/xtypo_dropcap]ormer top Khmer Rouge cadre ‘Duch’ plans to appeal the 35-year sentence handed down to him Monday by a United Nations-backed tribunal.

Duch’s lawyer Kar Savuth told AFP, “We will appeal against the [court’s] decision,” without giving further details.

Duch, whose real name is Kaing Guek Eav, had his sentence reduced to 19 years. Five years were removed because he was illegally detained from 1999 and 2007 by a Cambodian Military Court, and he was also given credit for time served, read the judgment by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).

Before his trial began, Duch had asked forgiveness from his victims, then he asked for an acquittal, raising questions about the sincerity of his earlier statement.

The court found him guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. “Mr. Kaing not only implemented, but also actively contributed to the development of the policies of the Communist Party of Kampuchea at S-21 [prison],” said a statement by the U.N. after the ruling.
