[xtypo_dropcap]D[/xtypo_dropcap]ubai has ruled out using full body scanners at airports, owing to concerns over religious and ethical sensibilities.

The emirate, which is a major transit point in the Middle East and sees hundreds of thousands of passengers each day, is governed under Islamic law.

The scanners raise privacy concerns because they allow operators to see under passengers clothes.

“The use of such a device violates personal privacy and it raises a very sensitive issue for passengers, in addition to the fact that it does not complement our national ethics,” Brig. Ahmed bin Thani, the Dubai Police’s director of airport security, told the English-language National newspaper.

Security personnel at the airport have dealt with 732 criminal cases so far this year, compared to a total of 1,382 cases last year.
