MACCLESFIELD, N.C. —Authorities in North Carolina say the driver of a school bus that overturned with 19 children on board will face charges.

State Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mike Baker said 40-year-old Julianne Bridgers of Pinetops is charged with careless and reckless driving. The patrol says Bridgers told officers she swerved Friday to avoid a deer that ran in front of the bus.

Edgecombe County public schools spokeswoman Susan Hoke says the bus was carrying 19 children when it overturned. She said she didn’t know how many required treatment for their injuries or how badly they were hurt.

Hoke says the bus was on its way to G.W. Carver Elementary School in Pinetops when it rolled over.

WITN reports Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight as saying 15 students were injured.
