A car plunged more than 40 feet into the Norwalk River in Connecticut earlier this week, and a police body camera video captured a dramatic rescue.
The camera shows two firefighters and a police officer taking off the door of the car as they realize someone is in the car, which landed upside down.
“We’ve got one! We’ve got one!” one is heard saying. “It’s occupied!”
Norwalk police Lt. Terry Blake said the victim was breathing and alert when he was taken out of the seat of the crashed car.
“He was verbally responsive to the firefighters and police officers at the scene,” Blake said, reported CBS New York.
If the driver stayed in the water longer, he could have drowned or at the very least, suffered severe hypothermia.
“I think the firefighters and the officers were kind of surprised that first of all there was somebody in the car and that the individual was still alive when they got to him,” Norwalk police Chief Tom Kulhawik said, reported FOX Boston. “Very fortunate and I’m very proud of the officers and the teamwork that they showed with the fire department in rescuing the individual,” Kulhawik added.
The driver was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries but is expected to recover.
