Donor Leaves Small Fortune in Japan Restroom

An unknown Japanese donor in a public restroom left $131,000 to be given to charity for victims of the devastating March earthquake that hit northern Japan, according to media reports.

The wad of bills was organized neatly and placed in a plastic bag in the public washroom at the Sakado City Hall building, located north of Tokyo, the BBC reported. Inside the bag was a note with instructions to give the money to quake and tsunami victims.

“I am all alone and have no use for the money,” the anonymous note added, according to the broadcaster.

City officials said the money would be handed over to the Red Cross if no one claimed it within three months.

“I’m moved by the valuable offer made by a citizen. I hope that the donation will help the reconstruction in Tohoku,” the mayor of Sakado, Hitoshi Iri, told the Kyodo news agency.
