Donald Trump Jr. on Monday responded to speculation that his father could be considering a campaign to be potentially the speaker of the House.
Trump Jr. said that he knows that former President Trump could meet the challenge “unless there’s a couple of other people in the conservative movement that really step up who can really do what Donald Trump can do.”
The former president’s first-born child added that Republicans need a “deeper bench” of people who support his father’s movement, suggesting that certain “RINOs,” or Republicans in name only, are holding the GOP back.
“We’ve got to work on that,” Trump Jr. said. “We’ve got to get rid of the RINOs. We’ve got to get rid of the establishment clowns that are never going to actually fight. They'll tell you what you want to hear. But never actually do anything about it. We need to put real fighters in positions of power, and that’s how we’re going to make this change permanent and not temporary.”
In the interview, the younger Trump did not offer any more details about whether his father would consider a 2024 presidential bid. Former President Trump has been asked about the possibility on several occasions after leaving office but said he hasn’t made a decision yet.
Last month, several people close to the former president, including his former chief of staff, claimed they believe Trump will again run for president.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), meanwhile, said that Trump “plans to run, I think,” but noted that the former commander-in-chief “hasn’t fully committed that yet.”
“But I certainly hope he does, because no president has done more of what he said he would do than President Trump,” Jordan added. “Best president I think we’ve ever had. Keeping his word, doing what he said, doing what he was elected to do.”
In a recent interview, separately, Trump indicated that he would make an announcement on a possible presidential bid after the 2022 midterms.
