Defending US Open champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round Wednesday when Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland retired in the third set due to injury. The match was previously suspended Tuesday night due to rain and then ended with Djokovic in command ahead 6-4, 6-1, 3-1 on Wednesday.
“It’s an unfortunate situation that happened with him, but I felt that I was hitting the ball well in the last two sets before that happened,” said Djokovic, according to a report on the U.S. Open’s website. “Hopefully I can keep that going for the next match.”
Wawrinka’s obvious weakness against Djokovic was his service game as he got just 23 of 57 first serves in. Of his 34 second-serves he won just 12 points.
Djokovic will play Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarterfinals.
