The Divergent movie is set to come out fairly soon, with a March 21, 2014 release date. The movie is being touted as the next “Hunger Games.”

Spoilers and other news and rumors about the cast and plot are coming out.

Let’s check some of them out below.

-Shailene Woodley (“The Spectacular Now”) stars as the main female character Beatrice “Tris” Prior.

-Theo James (“Underworld: Awakening”, “The Inbetweeners”) stars as the main male character  Tobais “Four.”

-Kate Winslet is in the movie in a big role, as Jeanine Matthews, the leader of the Erudite faction. She aims to capture Beatrice and other Divergents to experiment with.

-Ashley Judd is also in the movie, as Beatrice’s mother Natalie Prior. Tony Goldwyn (President Gitzgerald Grant in “Scandal”) is Beatrice’s father Andrew Prior, while Ansel Elgort (“Carrie”) is her younger brother Caleb Prior.

-The plot follows Prior as she moves through a society that is divided into five factions that each represent a different virtue. Teenagers have to decide at one point if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another. Both are life-long coices. Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone; in the trailer, we can see that she fits into none of the factions and works to keep this a secret from others.

-Uriah won’t be in the first movie because his role is too minor but will have a large part in “Insurgent,” the next movie in the series. Author Veronica Roth told BuzzFeed that she doesn’t have an ideal candidate and just wants someone who’s a very good actor. “They considered a lot of talented young men for that role and it didn’t work out,” she said. I hope they maybe go back to the pool now that the timing has changed to see if they’re available, because some of them were really great.”

-The fear landscapes in the first movie are going to be “weird and hopefully creepy,” Roth said. She saw some of the scenes while on the set.

-The story is set in the future, but there’s no set year or time period. “The reason it’s not in there is because I am terrible at estimating time and how long it takes for certain things to happen and for changes to happen, so I just kept it deliberately ambiguous,” Roth said. “When I tried to figure it out, I just stressed myself out, so I think it’s just really far in the future.”

-Some characters get killed off during the story. And Roth said that among the scenes she would change, she wishes she didn’t kill some of the characters. “I just think the story maybe could’ve been stronger or gone in a really interesting direction if some of them had survived,” she said.

-In book news, there will be four short stories about Tobias coming out in February. Three are a prequel to when he met Tris, and the fourth has “a significant amount of overlap with Divergent.”

-For the movies, “Insurgent” got a release date of March 20, 2015; while “Allegiant” is due out march 18, 2016.
