LOS ANGELES—The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion welcomed its patrons for Shen Yun Performing Arts Company’s final appearance in L.A. County, Saturday, Jan. 14, for the 2012 season. Based out of New York, Shen Yun is comprised of three dance companies that tour the world with a brand new production each year.
Enjoying the performance were Debra Lynne Terrill, a business development officer for a credit union, and her husband Clark Terrill, Live Nation’s director of purchasing.
Sharing her experience of Shen Yun Mrs. Terrill said, “I loved the show; my background is dance, so I appreciate the beauty of the execution of the dance; it’s absolutely marvelous.” She further added, “I think that the dancers’ skills are really exceptional and I appreciate the beauty of the dancers, the unison is absolutely lovely and the fluid movement is gorgeous.”
Shen Yun is dedicated to revitalizing China’s lost culture through the arts. It features classical Chinese dance, an orchestra, and vocalists, with all-original compositions to express the divine nature of ancient Chinese history.
“I love Chinese history, and I love Chinese traditions and that’s the reason I came … to celebrate Chinese dance and freedom of expression. I’m enjoying that tonight.”
Mr. Terrill’s grandparents went to China in the 1920’s when traditional Chinese culture still existed, so he has a true appreciation for authentic Chinese history. Mr. Terrill said, “I love it, very, very energetic, and I love the facial expressions as well as the choreography; it’s just phenomenal. My grandparents were in China back in the 1920’s so we have a lot of antiques in our home from China, so it’s always had a special place in our home and in our hearts, just to see it come alive on stage is marvelous.”
Shen Yun brings a divinely inspired nature and ethereal quality to the dance. Through classical Chinese dance, it tells myths and legends of China’s ancient ancestors coming alive on stage.
Learning about China’s 5,000-year-old civilization, Mr. Terrill expressed his view, “I think they do a very nice job of bringing the history to life and to have everyone in the audience enjoy it and experience it.”
“I think it’s marvelous, just looking at the Chinese history … and how the culture has been so inspirational to the people of China over the years and how they have gained so much strength by their devotion.”
