Direct SSDI Check Worth up to $3,345 Will Be Sent Out This Week

Eligible recipients of certain Social Security programs are set to receive their checks and payments this week, according to a schedule of payments.

Individuals whose birthdays fall on the first through the 10th of the month will get their Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments on Wednesday, Sept. 14, according to a schedule from the Social Security Administration (pdf).

The average monthly Social Security Disability Insurance payment is $1,223 while the maximum is $3,345 in 2022, according to the Social Security Administration (pdf). Those payments are calculated based on work history.

It’s described as a payroll tax-funded federal insurance program managed by the Social Security Administration for those who have a medical disability that impedes their ability to work.

The agency says the SSDI program pays benefits to individuals and certain family members if they have “worked long enough—and recently enough—and paid Social Security taxes on your earnings.” Along with the Supplemental Security Income (SSI), SSDI allows for monthly benefits to be paid if one has a “medical condition expected to last at least one year or result in death” and meet other, non-medical requirements, according to its website.

SSDI, SSI, and Social Security retirement benefits are frequently confused. SSI is a program for disabled children, disabled adults, and the elderly who have income and resources below a certain threshold, while a legitimately disabled person receives SSDI

SSDI recipients can also qualify for SSI if they have low income or resources and can provide their work history, says the administration. Those who apply for SSDI have to submit their medical records in order to receive the benefits.

Its website says that the agency will have to “confirm you worked enough years to qualify” and will “evaluate any current work activities.”

As of the end of 2020, there were approximately 9.7 million Americans who received SSDI payments, including 8.2 million disabled workers, 1.4 million children of those workers, and about 100,000 spouses of those workers, according to a recent report issued by the Social Security Administration (pdf).

And, according to the Social Security website, for SSI recipients, the maximum federal amount for 2022 is $841 for an eligible individual, $1,261 for an eligible individual with an eligible spouse, and $421 for an essential person every month.

The exact amount people receive from the SSI program on a monthly basis is based on living arrangements, income, and other factors. The maximum SSI amount also changes based on cost-of-living adjustments, with 2022’s rate standing at 5.9 percent.
