Diego Rodriguez, defence of Nacional for Uruguay, has died following a car accident in Montevideo on Thursday Sept. 9.

The 22 year-old soccer player was driving a Peugeot 207 which was written off in a head-on collision near the city centre.

Rodriguez was hospitalized in a coma and doctors were forced to carry out emergency brain surgery.

His father, former international defender Juan Jacinto Rodriguez and current member of the coaching staff of Al-Shabab of Saudi Arabia arrived late on Friday to the Uruguayan capital to be by his son's bedside, according to AFP.

However on Saturday the young man died of a heart attack, according to the hospital.

The young player had joined Nacional a few weeks ago. He played in the game that his team tied 1-1 against Tanque Sisley in the third round of the championship opening.
