R.A. Dickey won his major-league leading 18th game Wednesday as the Mets (65-72) downed the Cardinals (74-63) 6–2 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
The 37-year-old Dickey, who had previously never won more than 11 games in any season, allowed two runs on eight hits in six and two-thirds innings while striking out five. One of the runs he allowed was a solo home run to opposing pitcher Adam Wainright, his first of the season.
On the mound, Wainright wasn’t so sharp, going five innings and allowing five runs on eight hits. The big blow was a three-run home run by Ike Davis, his 26th of the season. Davis’ round-tripper put the Mets up 5–1 in the fifth and they never looked back.
The Mets are off on Thursday before welcoming Atlanta this weekend for a three-game set.
