Dick Cheney underwent heart surgery after he “began to experience increasing congestive heart failure” and is recovering in a Virginia hospital.

The former vice president of the United States had a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implanted at Inova Fairfax Heart and Vascular Institute last week, he said in a statement released on Wednesday.

The LVAD – a small pump – “improves heart function,” Cheney said in the statement. “[It] will enable me to resume an active life,“ he added.

Cheney has a history of heart problems and suffered his first heart attach in 1978. He was 37 at the time.

“Over the years, excellent care from my doctors and advances in medicine and technology have allowed me to live a full and active life, for which I am very grateful,” Cheney said, adding that the surgery went “very well.”
