Diane Lane is taking up the role of Martha Kent, Clark Kent’s mother, in the upcoming Superman movie directed by Zack Snyder, Warner Bros. announced in a press release on Tuesday, March 2.

Lane will be starring with Henry Cavill, who was announced as the new Superman in January. Other casting information have not been released.

“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman,” Snyder states in the release.

“We are thrilled to have Diane in the role, because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

Lane, 47, will be the youngest of the actresses cast as Martha Kent, reported Reuters. Former actresses include Eva Marie Saint, then 80, for 2006’s Superman Returns, and Phyllis Thaxter, 57, for the 1978 film Superman.

The actress was nominated for an Academy Award for the drama Unfaithful in 2002 and is recently remembered as the captivating lead actress of last year’s Secretariat. Lane will soon be seen on HBO’s new feature, Cinema Verite, alongside Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini in April.

The untitled Superman film is up for a December 2012 release and will be co-produced by Christopher Nolan.
