Detroit, which already has a bad reputation as one of the most violent cities in America, saw an uptick in the number of murders in 2012.

The city recorded 386 homicides last year—up 42 from 2011’s figures, according to The Detroit News. This means that the murder rate was 53 per 100,000 people, which is the highest rate among the top 20 most-populous cities in the United States.

“We’ve just lost respect for each other; we’ve lost respect for life,” Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said, according to The Detroit News. “And in some kind of way, all of us have to get back involved in this to give back to this next generation.”

Bing said that the city’s police department needs help from the citizens.

“I think the message that we want our citizens to understand is we need them,” Bing said, according to the Detroit Free Press. “We need them to help us. I just don’t believe that our police department should have the total responsibility for safety in the city.”
