A terminal at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport was evacuated on Monday after a suspicious item was found at a security checkpoint.

The terminal was later reopened around two hours later.

Screeners with the Transportation Security Administration found a suspicious item in a passenger’s carry-on luggage, Michael Conway, an airport spokesman, told CNN.

A bomb squad looked into the luggage and other passengers were kept “a safe distance away,” he added.

The passenger who carried the item was not arrested but was detained, he said.

The airport said the squad left the terminal with the item, which had been in an X-ray machine, and travelers were allowed to return about 8:20 a.m.

Airport spokesman Scott Wintner says in an email a person associated with the object was detained, but he didn’t have details.

The TSA said in a statement the evacuation was a “precautionary measure.”

“When they closed one of the security checkpoints, they rerouted everyone to the second security checkpoint, and now they’ve closed the terminal,” one passenger told CBS Detroit.

“This response was a strong team effort by Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Airport Authority Police, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and airline personnel,” reads a statement from authorities, according to ABC-15.
