Dell Inc. on Monday agreed to purchase technology storage firm 3Par for $1.15 billion in an effort to better compete with rivals Hewlett-Packard Co. and International Business Machines Inc.

The deal grants Dell access to the data storage market, which is on the upswing as cloud computing becomes increasingly more relevant. The 3Par acquisition is Dell’s second purchase in a month, as in July the company bought Ocarina Networks for an undisclosed amount.

“We have aligned our storage offerings over the last several years to provide our customers choice and value,” said Brad Anderson, Dell senior vice president, in a statement.
