HONOLULU—Shen Yun gave its last of four performances to an enthusiastic audience at the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu on May 5. Among those attending the performance were husband and wife Donald and Helga Buckles.

“I wish we had seen it five years ago, when it first came out. You know we’ve been meaning every year to come see it; this is the first year we came. We really missed something,” said Mrs. Buckles, who works as a policy analyst for the Department of Defense.

Mr. Buckles, who is a retired engineer, said that the performance was a positive experience for him.

“It’s absolutely fascinating ... it’s just beyond imagination,” Mr. Buckles said.

“The imagination that went into this show ... I really have trouble explaining just what they did,” he said.

Shen Yun was established in 2006 in New York with the mission to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Buckles said that they were particularly impressed by the graphics technology used in the performance. According to the Shen Yun website “Shen Yun’s digital-backdrop team creates vividly animated settings, extending the stage and transporting the audience to a world where heaven and earth are one.”

The digital backdrops are seamlessly synchronized with all other parts of the performance such as the dance and music.

“Some of the things that they’ve done are absolutely fascinating; I mean being able to take a character that’s doing a performance forward on the stage and then have him go into the background ... that’s mind-boggling, to me,” said Mr. Buckles.

Also according to Mrs. Buckles the way that the dancers were able to move between the stage and the digital backdrop was “fantastic.”

“Just the thought that went into this, the talent that went into this, it’s indescribable,” Mr. Buckles said. He said that he would recommend the performance to his friends.
