Fierce fighting between Islamic militants and Yemeni government forces has left seven soldiers and 17 Islamic militants dead in the past two days in the Southern province of Abyan, reported CNN.

The bulk of the fighting has been in Zinjibar and Jaar.

Clashes between government and al Qaeda forces have left many dead in the city of Zinjibar, said Qasim Bin Hadi, Zinjibar’s head of security.

“Bodies of dead people are everywhere in the streets,” Bin Hadi said.

Government forces have been using airstrikes. An unauthorized source told CCN that the majority of deaths over the past two days have come as a result of the bombings.

As clashes between government forces and anti-government dissenters have increased over the past few months, al-Qaeda militants have also become increasingly aggressive.
