The Washington, D.C., Police Department is “currently investigating” tweets made by satire newspaper The Onion regarding a fake story it did on members of Congress taking school children hostage.

The Onion made a series of tweets on its account regarding the fake incident. “BREAKING: Congress demanding $12 trillion ransom or ‘all the kids die,’” read one. Each of the tweets linked back to The Onion article.

However, as The Associated Press is reporting, a spokesperson with the Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said, “It has come to our attention that recent twitter feeds are reporting false information concerning current conditions at the U.S. Capitol.

“There is no credibility to these stories or the twitter feeds. The U.S. Capitol Police are currently investigating the reporting,” she added.

Initially The Onion had reported “Screams and Gunfire heard inside Capitol Building,” which may have initially brought about fears and concerns.
