Ike Davis hit a ninth-inning walkoff home run off Houston reliever Wilton Lopez to give the Mets (59-69) a dramatic 2–1 win. Davis actually accounted for both Mets runs as he also hit a solo shot in the fourth inning off Houston starter Lucas Harrell.
“We needed it bad. We needed it,” said manager Terry Collins, according to a report on the team’s website. “You look up in the ninth and the guy is really pitching good. We’ve got one run on the board again and three hits. You’re just thinking, ‘Hey, somebody’s got to get this going.’ And that’s what Ike did today.”
Davis, who started the season in an awful slump (.170 average through May), now has 24 home runs on the season.
Mets starter Jeremy Hefner pitched well going eight innings and allowing just one run while striking out seven, but got the no-decision.
