Footballer David Beckham insists there has been no discussion of retirement despite England team manager Fabio Capello pouring cold water on his future prospects in the team.
Mr Beckham’s agent on Wednesday night promised the 35-year-old would “always be available for his country” as long as he was fit enough.
Fabio Capello had earlier said that Beckham was “a little bit old” when asked if he would be required as part of England’s Euro 2010 bid.
“David Beckham was and is really important for the national team but I choose new players, young players, because the future is the young,” Mr Capello told journalists on Wednesday night.
Mr Capello said Beckham would probably play one more game as a final hurrah, most likely against France in November.
“He will play one friendly to say bye bye,” he told reporters.
However the statement by Beckham’s agent said Bekham had not had any discussions with Capello and was up for selection.
“For your info, there has been no discussion of retirement,” the statement read.
“He will always be available for his country, when fit and if needed he will be there.”
England vice-captain Steven Gerrard said Mr Beckham was in with a fighting chance.
“You never know with David,” he told journalists. “I’m sure if he hears of that news it will drag him on to try to prove people wrong.”
Mr Beckham, now a midfielder for Los Angeles Galaxy, was sidelined for the World Cup by an Achilles injury.
