FUKUOKA, Japan—Many artists and art lovers attended Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company’s performance in Fukuoka, the largest city in southern Japan, on the afternoon of May 1. Chizuko Oouchida, a Japanese dance performer, made a special trip from Hiroshima City to Fukuoka to watch the show.
“The performance was just fabulous.” Ms. Oouchida, in a kimono, said. “I am a Japanese dance performer myself, and I can do a little tai chi, so I paid more attention to the expressions of the artists’ eyes, and their movements of hands and legs. I found that the artists’ expressions were very powerful. Their [movements of] hands and legs were just flawless. Whether jumping or spinning, they were quite outstanding. The costumes were extremely beautiful. Everything is just so perfect.”
Having joined in the chorus for singing Beethoven’s musical pieces, Ms. Oouchida was deeply impressed by the Shen Yun Orchestra and the solo vocal performers. “The tenors’ voices in today’s program were world-class. They were tremendous. The combination of Chinese and Western musical instruments was very harmonious. Music is really a universal language of the world.”
Ms. Oouchida, who often watches Japanese Kabuki performances, said some of the performances use backdrops as well, “but [the backdrop in] Shen Yun is much superior and is large-scale.” She said, “The backdrop was really interesting. It’s a confident attempt, just extremely perfect.”
She felt the warmth of the gods from the last program, Divine Mercy, “In that program, the earthquake was stopped by a god. I think that human beings should be more honest in front of gods. Gods are really sublime.”
In conclusion, Ms. Oouchida said she felt sorry that Shen Yun could not perform in China where communist ideology conflicts with traditional values, whereas it can perform everywhere else in the world.
