Damascus explosions: The capital of Syria, Damascus, was rocked by explosions on Sunday, with some reports suggesting were caused by an Israeli airstrike on a Syrian government military base in Qasioun Mountain.
Syrian state television said Israeli rockets were to blame for the explosion, which sent flames into the night sky, according to the Reuters news agency.
“The new Israeli attack is an attempt to raise the morale of the terrorist groups which have been reeling from strikes by our noble army,” state-run Syrian television claimed. It was referring to recent attacks by Syrian forces on rebels.
Sources told Al Jazeera television that an Israeli jet hit several military posts. Video footage was also uploaded of one of the explosions.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights group collected accounts from eyewitnesses saying they heard jets overhead before the explosions.
The Israeli military told Reuters “we don’t respond to this kind of report.”
Earlier on Saturday, Israeli officials confirmed that warplanes hit a shipment of missiles in Syria, according to the BBC. The missiles were said to be heading to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
