Dallas Braden pitched the 19th perfect game in the history of Major League Baseball on Sunday, leading the Oakland A’s to a 4–0 home victory against the high-flying Tampa Bay Rays.

Braden faced the minimum 27 batters over 9 innings.

Braden had six strikeouts in his afternoon of work. Before pitching his perfect game, Braden was averaging 1.70 walks per inning.

Braden lost his mother to cancer while he was playing high school baseball. His perfect game landed on Mother’s Day leaving a long lasting testament to the memory of his mother.

Mother’s Day may have been an element of inspiration, adding to his focus and motivation for a strong performance. Before his victory today, Braden was coming off a loss to the Texas Rangers in which he gave up three earned runs in seven innings of work.

Braden, a left-handed 26-year-old pitcher, added his name to the list of perfect games pitched in the history of American baseball. Those on the list of perfect games include Hall Of Fame pitchers Cy Young and Jim “Catfish” Hunter. Other well-known pitchers include, of course, Randy Johnson.

The most recent perfect game to be thrown came last July when the Chicago White Sox’s Mark Buehrle threw one, also against the Rays.
