Kings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes hosted a Barrier Free Justice Conference Thursday for lawyers, police officers, social workers, and other professionals.

The conference, titled “No Longer Suffering in Silence,” was designed to educate professionals about interpersonal violence in the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, as well as highlight the services that are available to people in the community.

The conference was held at the DA’s Brooklyn office. Award-winning advocate and Executive Director Marilyn J. Smith of the Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services in Seattle, Wash., was the keynote speaker.

Her organization provides education, training and support for people in the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. DA Hynes’s office reported they were pleased to be able to support this community and gratified that [the conference] turned out well.
