The Curiosity rover has been exploring the surface of Mars, and it recently came upon an interesting find.
A news release on Arizona State University’s Red Planet Report website reports that an on-board device captured two frames of a small meteorite dubbed “Egg Rock.”
One of the posted images shows the object located atop a brown landscape while a close-up view highlights its somewhat smooth but uneven surface. Experts think it is likely composed of a mixture of nickel and iron.
While its appearance is somewhat unique, meteorites are reportedly somewhat common on Mars. Part of the reason is that many contain iron which tends to make them more durable and resistant to erosion.
Curiosity has been on Mars for about four years, and it is currently moving around a landmark called Mount Sharp.
