TAICHUNG, Taiwan—On the afternoon of March 8, people flocked to the Taichung City Chung Shan Hall to watch Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company’s 2013 third show in Taichung. Among the excited crowd was Lan Shishui, chairman of the Cross-Strait Businessmen Fortune Creating Exchange Association.

Seeing Shen Yun for the first time, Lan Shishui expressed that he was amazed by the grand scope of the performance, with high-tech stage and lighting, as well as the spectacular dances in great unison. He noted: “This is a high level artistic performance featuring the 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture. I feel it is very meaningful to promote the traditional Chinese [culture] through the performing arts.”

“The interpretation [of the traditional culture] by dancers in brilliant costumes, coupled with their graceful and elegant movements, presented the magnificence of the show even without words. It is indeed remarkable,” he added.

“Take the following dances for instance: Han Imperial Air, Tang Dynasty Battleground, When Shaolin Monks Protected the Emperor, The Emperor Journeys to the Moon, and Yang Zhi and His Sabre. Each program has abundant implications. Dancers’ costumes illustrated the characteristics of different dynasties, and the legends of each dynasty were demonstrated on the stage with classical Chinese dance. I think it is very meaningful and informative, as what they presented is much more than singing and dancing, he explained.

Talking about Shen Yun’s historical and cultural values, Mr. Lan said: “This kind of meaning and connotations can truly touch every audience member’s heart. Though we have 5,000 years of history, it can be forgotten gradually from generation to generation during the process of the long history. I think it is very meaningful to use stage performance to help people understand the 5,000 years of the Chinese history and culture.”

Mr. Lan further stated: “Among the audience members of this Shen Yun show, many are seniors. But I also found that there are quite a lot of young people, which suggests that Shen Yun is appealing to the younger generation as well. It is great to let our next generation know more about the traditional Chinese culture.”
