NEW YORK—Several groups have joined together in a lawsuit against the city, protesting plans to change Coney Island’s boardwalk partly to concrete. Now, the groups have a court date set for early October, according to a local report.
The New York City Parks and Recreation Department has proposed replacing wood on the Coney Island boardwalk, which has been deteriorating, with concrete to better reinforce the boardwalk and allow safe passage for emergency vehicles.
But this would destroy the character of the boardwalk, according to the website of the Coney-Brighton Boardwalk Alliance. The alliance offers alternatives such as recycled plastic lumber for the support structure and “sustainable domestic hardwoods such as Black Locust or White Oak.”
The city’s Design Commission approved the parks department’s proposal during a March public hearing.
An online petition on change.org has garnered 2,493 supporters.
The lawsuit is against the proposal for the boardwalk, a 10-foot-wide concrete lane and plastic recycled lumber on either side, according to the local web blog Amusing the Zillion.
A hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 4, at 9:45 a.m. at Kings County Supreme Court, according to the blog, citing an email sent from the boardwalk alliance.
