HOUSTON—Councilwoman Wanda Adams came to “celebrate” Shen Yun Performing Arts’ opening performance in Houston at Jones Hall, Dec. 21.
It was the “beauty of the show, the bright colors, the performance as a whole,” that made her want to come back, Ms. Adams said. “I had a wonderful time.”
“The show is a beautiful show as always. I’ve seen the show before and every time the show seems like there’s something different about the show each time, but something that makes the show more different than before,” Ms. Adams said.
Councilwoman Adams added that knowing some of the history of China, seeing the New York-based company’s performance let her connect with the culture more.
“You see the dancers, the culture, and it makes you connect with it more; it was a great experience,” Ms. Adams said. She also mentioned the Shen Yun Orchestra, which blends classical Western with classical Chinese instruments for a unique sound.
“To me it’s amazing you could connect with the performance not like the radio or a CD. The live music’s what brought the performance alive,” Ms. Adams said.
Another aspect that brought the performance alive and impressed Ms. Adams was the stories Shen Yun told of the political strife in China, she said.
“When you’re looking at the culture and some of the reality of the things they have to go through, the expression of their religion, and to fight for their religion and stand for what you believe in, in the end they bring reality to the staged performance,” said Ms. Adams.
The performances included dances that depicted the situation of Falun Gong, a peaceful practice, still being persecuted in China today.
“I think they bring reality to life on the stage, that’s exactly what they did,” Councilwoman Adams said of the stories Shen Yun presented.
“You know the artists were so in sync, and they were all together on one accord,” Ms. Adams commented, noting that all the dancers look so happy.
“They love to express what they’re talking about and telling the story,” Ms. Adams said. “That is something that needs to be commended.”
“The choreography was just fabulous and deserved a round of applause, a standing ovation because they do a wonderful job as always and they need to be commended. This is just a great day for Houston.
“I appreciate them choosing Houston again.”
