CONWAY, S.C.—A South Carolina firefighter has died after being struck by a fire engine while responding to a house fire.

Conway Fire Chief Le Hendrick tells local news outlets that firefighter Christopher Gene Ray died Sunday afternoon while responding to a structure fire.

Cpl. Sonny Collins of the South Carolina Highway Patrol says Ray had been riding on a Conway fire engine when he fell off and was struck as the fire truck reversed over him.

The State reports that Ray had been employed with the city of Conway since February 2010.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick has scheduled an autopsy for Monday. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

No other injuries were reported at the scene.
